2.09.2025. Opening of the Exhibition “Belarus. Voices of Banned Books”

On September 2, PEN Belarus presented an exhibition dedicated to books banned in Belarus at the opening of the 91st PEN International Congress in Kraków.

We are deeply grateful to our partners from PEN Poland and PEN International for their support in organizing the exhibition. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all visitors for their solidarity and warm support of Belarusians in their struggle for human rights and cultural freedoms.

The banning of books is not only an act of censorship, but also a violation of the right to freedom of expression and access to information, as enshrined in international treaties. We document every case to ensure that the truth about cultural repression is preserved and heard.

Today in Belarus:

  • 222+ books banned for political or ideological reasons
  • 179 + authors under prohibition
  • 5 independent publishers liquidated in the past five years
  • At least 40 writers are not free
